For the second quarter (August to October 2021), we started to implement some initiatives that youth networks had been preparing. Youth networks were the key in implementing those activities. At the same time, we also continue to provide capacity building to them. Moreover, we coordinated the regular meetings among themselves to continue their planning and implementation of Youth LEAD activities. We also conducted some campaign related to the International Youth’s Day. We celebrated virtually by promoting messages around and awareness of youth issues on social media.

Provide Capacity building for 10 youth networks on how to use Facebook

The training was commenced by a welcome remark from Miss. Prak Monirath, KYA President who introduced the purposes of the training and expectations after the session. She highlighted the significance of the Facebook campaign in the context of the Internet- and Covid-19-drive society. Next, she handed over the floor to the trainer, Mr. Chy Sophat who is an expert in digital technology and communication. He has been producing online content for educational purposes for years. He is an experienced event organizer, for instance, Bar Camp Phnom Penh.

The half-day session covered four important discussions including key promotional strategies on Facebook, Facebook Livestreaming, Social Media/Cyber Security, and Blue Tick Request on Facebook. The trainer started with the first agenda exploring the important elements of the Facebook campaign. Participants interacted with the trainer by differentiating their Facebook Page from their Facebook account. Participants were advised to explore and understand audiences, locations, sex, interest, and behavior on Facebook through a Facebook function. In addition to that, the trainer walked the participants through how to come up with creative content. The journey includes identifying the participants’ strengths and resources, audience’s strengths, sensitivity, social events, and testing.

Next, the trainer explained and demonstrated the live streaming on Facebook using different devices (computer and smartphone) for different purposes. He also introduced software called OBS for Operating Broadcaster Software. Moving forward the session, the trainer discussed possible security problems that people may have faced or feared when they were on Facebook. The participants engaged by sharing their experiences and perspectives of the cyber security matter. Then the trainer shared the steps in securing a Facebook account. They included the primary contact (email or telephone), placing some friends as contact persons for security matters of the account, using two-factor authentication, etc. Furthermore, participants were walked through different ways that one could review their activities and information on Facebook to secure their account. Participants and the trainer also explored the option of assigning Facebook friends to Restrict List or Block List as well as blocking pages and applications.

Lastly, the trainer illustrated how a blue tick (Facebook verification) can be obtained. A blue tick account is generally seen as an official, verified, and popular account, which could be trusted. Therefore, it is important for some individuals who would engage a lot of audiences on social media to get a blue tick. Organizations can also be verified by the blue tick. Throughout the demonstration, audiences got a better picture of how a blue tick could be obtained. Finally, the trainer also shared his personal campaign management experience which could benefit the audiences well for their campaign management. The trainer showed a document containing different sheets that interact and guide how a campaign can be managed and executed. A sample demo is useful for the participants to translate their plans into such a framework.

According to the post-test survey, the capacity building session has increased the knowledge of the participants on Facebook strategy and safety. For instance, 100% of respondents reported highly improved understanding on Facebook promotion strategy planning and creative content searching. While 20% suggested that they would still struggle, 80% reported that they have improved understanding on Facebook Boost and Livestream. The reason for the struggle may be the lack of actual practice and familiarity on Facebook among the respondents. Furthermore, 60% of respondents shows that they have learnt clearly two factor authentication and 40% reported increased awareness, which contributes to their safety on the Facebook surfing. Lastly, all respondents believe that their personal Facebook account and page are in a safe hand.

Conduct I Know We Know online discussion

The first “I Know We Know” online discussion was organized on the Sunday of October 10, 2021. The event was lived from a face-to-face discussion between speakers and moderator at KYA’s office. Before the session, youth members, KYA staff arrived early to do the rehearsal. Speakers and moderator were also able to discuss some questions in advance. The session began at 10 AM and lasted for one hour. During the discussion, the other members of Youth LEAD helped provide comments and monitored interactions on Facebook live.

The show went on under the topic of “relationship between online study and climate change”. Attending the discussion, the two speakers and a moderator included:

In the opening, the moderator began asking general questions about the speakers’ experience on issues related to their online study and challenges. Moving to the main concentration of the discussion was the connection between online study and climate change, the moderator asked the two speakers on their perspectives on how online study affects climate change. As the discussion went on, in-depth insight on Covid-19 challenges and advantages of the online study was revealed.

Furthermore, the online audiences interacted with the discussion by reacting to the show and writing their questions in the comment section. The questions included the comparison between study at school and study online and the relationship between online study and climate change. Responding to the latter, the speakers were sharing on the issues such as electricity consumption, travel-related gas, and other consumption. Likewise, the moderator linked the question to how to access climate change content. Online search, smartphone, school subjects, and community interaction were the sources that speakers usually accessed to climate change information. Finally, speakers shared their suggestions on how youth could participate in climate change campaigns such as volunteering in the cause, producing social media videos, etc. The moderator concluded the discussion by asking for perspective on the post-Covid-19 era and the prospect of the climate change situation.

The show reached out to 477 viewers within 2 days. Among them, there were 305 shares, 29 reactions and 10 comments including 3 key questions. The session deemed successful for having covered the key questions showing the link between online study and climate change which was the current trend that students are experiencing. Likewise, the interaction with online audiences shows the interest and significance of the discussion. The team will do a reflection on the first show among themselves in the next team meeting the following day.

International Youth’s Day Celebration

In the celebration of International Youth’s Day, KYA initiated some campaign on social media including quote posters and profile pictures on Facebook. There were 10 quotes from youth networks which highlighted the importance of youth’s roles in social development. The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of the celebration and encourage young people to engage in any type of social activities. The messages were sent across young people and other stakeholders through Facebook comments, shares and likes on KYA Facebook page.

Monthly youth networks meeting

During this quarter, youth network met each other for 5 times. In general, the meeting was organized to allow members of Youth LEAD to discuss their activity planning and find solutions toward their project implementation. The meeting normally lasted around 1 hour. With the pandemic in action, most of the meetings were held online to ensure that everyone could safely participate. Among these meetings was an introduction to the new project coordinator who would take charge to coordinate the project and work with youth members. Another session aimed at getting everyone including the coordinate to communicate and get closer together. It involved some team building activities on the Zoom platform. Furthermore, during the session, the members were assigned into smaller teams who would be responsible for some certain activities of the project. They discussed their roles and progresses in the meeting. The meetings also served as the update platform which the project coordinator use to inform changes and planning of the project. Besides regular meetings, they were grouped in a meeting channel telegram where they discussed project activities and plans and got to know each other.

Key challenges

During the this quarter of the project, we were facing some key challenges as a result of a slow down implementation, covid-19 driven online activities and conflicting schedule among youth members. The challenges prevented us from completing all the planned activities such as capacity building for youth network, online events on Facebook, I Know We Know Program, Seed Money, and etc. To respond, KYA staff worked in a flexible manner with smaller groups of Youth LEAD to push forward the implementation of project activities. When possible, we organized hybrid activities combining offline and online activities. Furthermore, KYA revisited the activities plan and proposed changes in the activity implementation for the best possible outcome. For instance, we further provided a capacity building for youth networks on Facebook management.
