The comprehensive training aimed to deepen participants' understanding of crucial aspects such as the distinction between "gender" and "sex," the terminology surrounding LGBTIQ+, and the cultural nuances associated with addressing these topics in the Khmer language. It also emphasized the importance of using non-discriminatory language in media coverage.
Prior to this training, Prem Neth had never been exposed to LGBTQI issues and terminology. In a candid reflection, she admitted to having bullied her gay friends by using derogatory terms like "[Ktery]," oblivious to the emotional toll it inflicted on them. Recognizing her past mistakes, she expressed remorse for the hurt caused and committed to ceasing such behavior. Notably, she extended her apology to her friends and actively raised awareness among her peers, urging them to refrain from using derogatory language.
In a subsequent meeting with KYA and FHI’s staff, Prem Neth shared her newfound knowledge with her parents. Initially perplexed, her parents were hesitant about her involvement in a training that covered LGBTQI topics. However, Prem Neth patiently explained the importance of understanding and embracing diversity, ultimately gaining their acceptance. This positive outcome not only allowed her to participate freely in KYA's activities but also demonstrated the power of open communication in fostering understanding.
As a core member of KYA, Prem Neth actively engaged in various activities, including sharing sessions where she shared her experiences and insights. Additionally, she played a crucial role in discouraging her peers from engaging in bullying behaviors, thus contributing to the creation of a more inclusive and supportive environment within her social circle.
Looking ahead, Prem Neth expressed her commitment to spreading awareness and understanding of LGBTQI issues among friends who did not have the opportunity to attend the training. Her journey stands as a testament to the transformative impact of education and advocacy, showcasing the potential for positive change within individuals and their communities.
